For the Love of Locks

For the Love of Locks

-   As a Hairstylist, Hair is my forte,  having lived in Extreme Temperatures in Chicago,  I know how hair reacts in different weather conditions. I am fortunate enough to be destined here in “Nice Weather” Hawaii,  however the sun may not be as “nice” to your hair as one would like.  The sun opens up “Hair cuticle” which releases pigments of the hair, whether hair color is artificial or not, color fades because of the UV (ultraviolet) rays.  Unfortunately releasing color pigments also releases “natural oils” called “Sebum” from our hair, Sebum lubricates (shine) and protects our hair.  Hair protects our body from the elements around us.    Healthy hair is “Beautiful Hair”

Here are some tips to protect hair from the Natural Elements

1. Avoid being under the exposure of the sun,  Use fashionable hats to cover your Locks

2. When in the sun, If you do not have conditioners with “UV protection” ingredients.  Use “SPF  suntan lotion” on hair (at least 30 SPF), and yes the same lotion you use for your skin.

3. Condition Midstrands to ends of the hair with either  “Olive Oil” or” Coconut Oil” at least once a week.

4. Use “Professional” Hair color products that fights the” free radicals” in the air

Create Your Style

By: Ralph Malani

Personal Style

Personal style is what makes you unique and what people remember you by.  The style of your hair, make up, and clothes makes a statement of who you are to the public.  Hair, make up, and fashion are my passions.  I love to transform people with a new style and watch their attitude and confidence change.  One of my favorite clients is Raiatea Helm, I’ve been her personal stylist for 3 years.  She has gone from long to very short hair and from red to brown with several different shades of hilites.  Her make up has been changing as well.

- Make up should fit the event you’re going to.  For everyday, we go with natural warm shades and soft bronzers.  Lip glosses are great for day with just a little neutral lipliner to frame lips first.  Stage, photo shoot, and T.V. make up is different.  For this, Mr. Wade Bahn one of Hawai’i’s best make up artists, he is magic.

- Fashion makes a statement and gives you character.  Raiatea’s style has gone from traditional aloha attire to high fashion glam girl.  When I look for outfits for Raiatea, I always think of her body first.  Clothes should show off your figure by working with your curves and height, colors should match your skin tones and always wear good under garments for support.  I work with local boutiques like Soleil on Kapahulu and stores like Neiman Marcus for performance dresses.

Mix It Up!

Mixing designer clothes with Polynesian accessories, gives you high style with a kiss of island sweetness.  So ladies if you are looking to change up your look, remember that trendy is a waste of money.  Classic clean lines are always in style.
