Malama Aina
Aloha and welcome back! Reduce, reuse, recycle and malama (pronounced mah-lah-mah) go hand in hand. Malama is a Hawaiian value that means caring for one another and the environment. Our keiki (children) are the future. Let’s teach them to malama or better yet malama `aina, care for the land.
Keiki love having pets. Composting worms are a fun way to get your keiki to recycle green waste material. Maintenance is minimal, and the most fun comes when it is time to harvest the soil produced by the worms. Keiki get down and dirty, picking the worms out to separate them from the soil. The soil produced is rich in nutrients and is perfect as top soil for your plants and lawns.
Involve Your Keiki
How can you involve your keiki in this recycling process? Let them “feed” the worms, by putting vegetable scraps and plant shrubbery in the worm house. Ask them what they see when they feed the worms this will help you determine what kind of ecosystem changes need to be made. Finally, remind them they are doing their part to malama aina!
