Trends in Nightlife... by a few of our after dark favorites:

CHRISTIAN
Bar Manager - thirtynine hotel

"As for trends, I've noticed that cocktail culture is slowly on the way back to Hawaii, guests are more willing to spend a little more for fresh great tasting cocktails, and don't mind waiting a few seconds longer as they see the drinks being made, which enhances their experience. It seems the days of cheap pre-mixed, or too sweet and “fufu” drinks is slowly drifting away. Especially as people's dollars are more precious these days, it's nice to see guests choosing quality over quantity. I'd say giving our guests fantastic unique cocktails, in an amazing environment, served by genuine friendly bartenders, will beat out bargain basement priced bars every time."

My cocktail of choice:
The original 1944 Trader Vic Bergeron's Mai Tai, a Mai Tai that lives up to it's name Mai Tai Roa Ae, which means "out of this world."

CYRINA
Event Concept Designer

"To name a growing trend in Honolulu, I would make mention of the Revival of Chinatown. Every big city has and needs an “Arts District," a place where artists and musicians alike are showcased and adorned. Honolulu's Chinatown is rapidly living up to this name. From places like 39 Hotel, Next Door and Mercury to places like Hanks, Dragon Upstairs and Du Vin, we are seeing a diverse night life and music scene blossom before our very eyes. You can find everything from Indie Rock, electronic and "real" hip hop to Irish Folk, French Cabaret and New Orleans style Jazz. This is what I call a positive trend - Keep it up Chinatown! I say out with the Old Mash up and aka Hip Hop and in with the new Cutting Edge Honolulu. "

My Favorite Drink:
The Rose Petal – 39 Hotel

COREY
Manager - Rumfire

"In my opinion, the current trend in nightlife in Hawaii is towards a more exotic and different atmosphere with delicious, more sophisticated drinks, trendy foods, and an environment conducive to meeting and greeting new people, and seeing and being seen."

My cocktail of choice:
The Cucumber Lavender Mojito at RumFire...it has the perfect blend of a smooth, summer feel and a punch that gets the night going, heats up the conversation, and fires up tantalizing images in your mind that make you wonder, "where will the night take me?"

"Trends: The big one is an open bar for the 1st hour at many events, even on the weekends. This is a sign of the times with so much competition for the same crowd. DJs playing rock is on the upswing both at mainstream clubs & indie rock for the hipster scene. I like that trend. The indie rock scene is growing in general, just like it has been in  LA, SF, & NYC. The nice thing about that is it includes live music too. There are some very good indie rock bands now, which is really exciting.

I keep hearing of house making a comeback but I have been hearing that for awhile, however it's on the upswing in Vegas so who knows? Bottle Service just keeps growing, which is continuing a trend of the last several years.

Unfortunately the trend of fashionable tees keeps growing, which means less guys dressing up & instead opting to wear an $80 tee instead of a collared shirt & tie.

In general the lag time in trends on the mainland making their way to  Hawaii is shortening.  We are more in line with things going in LA or SF than people realize, it's just on a smaller scale with not as well known names."

Cocktail of choice:
Grey Goose & Red Bull
